Pet Ready for Spring

It has been a long winter in many parts of the country, but Spring is finally here! Days are getting longer, the temperature is starting to rise and now is the perfect time to get your furry friend ready for a season of outdoor fun. Just as we start planting gardens, swapping out our warmer clothes and opening up the windows, your pet can also benefit from a little extra care to transition smoothly to the new season.

Below are seven tips to ensure your pet is happy, healthy, and ready for Spring:

1. Spring Cleaning for Your Pet

As you deep-clean your home, don't forget about your pet! Be sure to wash bedding, collars, and leashes to get rid of dirt, odors, and allergens. Spring is a good time to check toys for signs of wear and tear. Replace any that are damaged to keep playtime safe.

2. Grooming & Shedding Control

Warmer temperatures cause many pets to start shedding their winter coats. Regular brushing helps control loose fur and prevent matting. A professional grooming session can also freshen up their coat, trim overgrown nails, and ensure they're feeling (and looking!) their best and minimize risk of pests (see #3 below).

3. Flea, Tick & Heartworm Prevention

Springtime means more outdoor adventures, but it also brings the increased risk of pests like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Be sure your pet is up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives to keep them safe from harmful parasites. Brushing and trimming the coat can also reduce risk.

4. Check-Up Time!

Spring is a smart time to schedule your pet's annual vet check-up. Ensure vaccinations are current, discuss any health or behavior concerns you have, and ask for advice on keeping your pet in top shape for the season ahead.

5. Springtime Allergies

Just like humans, many pets suffer from seasonal allergies. If you notice excessive itching, licking, or sneezing, consult a vet right away. Common allergens include pollen, grass, and mold, so regular paw wiping and baths can help minimize symptoms.

6. Outdoor Safety & Exercise

Nicer weather means it is time for longer walks, outdoor hikes, and playing in the yard or local dog park. Make sure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case they wander off. Check fences and leashes for security before heading outside.

7. Springtime Nutrition

If your pet's activity level increases in Spring, make sure they're getting a balanced diet to support their energy needs. Hydration is also key, so always have fresh water available, especially during outdoor activities. Have questions about what food your pet should be eating? Schedule an appointment.

Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your pet, but preparation is key! With a little extra care, you can ensure your furry companion is ready to embrace the season safely and happily.
